Hi! My name is Fleur Ummels.
I'm a Dutch costume designer and scenographer who graduated from the Institute of Performative Arts in Maastricht in 2022.
After my first year in college, in which I got to know costume and set design, I decided to continue studying both of them. I saw a clear and visible connection between costume design and scenography and found it interesting to design both parts next to each other.
Color palettes based on feeling and emotion and a certain uniformity in costumes can be found quite often in my work. In terms of scenography, I like to use minimalistic elements taken from reality, which creates a certain form of abstractness. This, I believe, allows different parts on stage to have multiple functions and also to capture the imagination of the audience.
Although I tend to work aesthetically in my designs, I also find it quite exciting to explore where in that aesthetic the underlaying pain or even ugly may lie. Experimenting with what this could mean for the design is something I find very interesting.
Furthermore, as an artist I also enjoy creating installations and graphic design. This allows me to work from a more autonomous perspective instead of a character or story-driven one.
